Basler Fasnacht
The Basel Fasnacht takes place between mid-February and early March and is intended to drive away winter. Etymologically, the word refers to the days before Lent (fasting). The carnival is the absolute highlight of the year for many Basel residents. For three whole days, the city is turned upside down. The Basler Fasnacht was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017.
The pre-carnival season
A few weeks before the actual carnival, people are introduced to the “drey scheenste Dääg” (carnival) through various pre-carnival events such as the “Drummeli”, the “Charivari” etc. These events combine short “Raamestiggli” (theatrical performances), “Schnitzelbängge” (satirical verses) and performances with traditional carnival music. The well-known melodies, “larvae” (masks) and costumes make hearts beat faster in excited anticipation.
