District markets

The city of Basel is characterised by its numerous districts, all of which have their own character and a (multi-) cultural, urban and industrial mix that together form an exciting as well as harmonious city. The district markets help to create meeting places and present the district in an open and friendly way.

Matthäusmarkt

The district market at the Matthäusplatz is selling local produce every Saturday. 80 per cent of the goods offered are home-grown or cultivated by the vendor. The Matthäusmarkt soon became a popular meeting place in Kleinbasel. You are also most welcome to the magnificent seasonal markets in spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Opening hours

Saturday 8 a.m. to 12 a.m.

Several markets selling different types of goods are one of the attractions of the St. Johann district: A farmers’ market selling vegetables, fruit, bread, cheese and coffee plus an ever-changing assortment of other goods as well as a large flea-market are held every Saturday on the Vogesenplatz. Basel’s oldest evening market takes place on the first Thursday of every month on the Hebelplatz, offering beer, wine, oysters, grilled foods and other products for those who have left their shopping until late in the day or who want a quick aperitif after work. The Basel Beer Market is always held on the last Friday and Saturday in August, where over twenty microbreweries are represented and a wide range of food is on offer on the Vogesenplatz.

The range on offer at the Märt am Tellplatz in the Gundeldinger quarter is of high quality, varied and fresh every Saturday and invites you to shop and feast.

The products can vary depending on the season, but the sale of organic vegetables and cheeses is usually the main focus here. The market, which has been running since August 2020, is intended to promote local industry in the area of quality agricultural products.
